Summer Internship

For six weeks this summer, I had an internship at the Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies, in Millbrook, NY. I was working under a researcher named Ken Schmidt who was running a long-term project there. I and three other girls were to create a website and an information kiosk (on the Cary grounds) in order to communicate Ken Schmidt's research to the public. To this end, we were to follow the field crew around and participate in their activities and methods in order to gain the necessary understanding to do so (and we ourselves were, in a way, an experiment--the purpose of the internship was to explore whether immersing students in an active research project could make them more able to understand and communicate the science they were learning).

Although it was a group effort between myself and the three other interns, there were certain aspects that each of us was responsible for; I was responsible for the artistic design of the website. I'm pleased to present my second (the first being this website) foray into the world of web design.

Due to some unforseen technical difficulties, tech support has to do some tinkering on this to get it to work with the hosting software they have. As soon as it's up and running, I'll have a link to it; in the meantime, below are some screenshots of a few pages from the original design.

Not For Sale

This is the home page, and the basic outline for the website. The background is a photo of the Cary Institute, where the research is taking place.

This is one of the pages in the section on birds, where each page focuses on a different species. This layout is very much like that of most of the other pages on the site.

This is the central hub of the section about the actual research project, or a kind of interactive map (a.k.a. a painstakingly assembled composite image, done using nothing but good old Microsoft Paint). This page serves as a jump-off point to delve into more specific topics by way of the different items which are also links.
