For this picture, I worked backwards. I covered the paper with a layer of charcoal, and erased out the bicycle. I then went back and did highlights/touchups with white charcoal. I think the effect is quite striking. Also, since we were drawing from actual bicycles sitting on top of classroom tables, I was able to get the proportions and perspective almost perfect.
