Hole in a
Rock
Charcoal on Stone
Hole: about 8" across
Rock: about 4' across Pennsylvania Governor's School
for the Arts, Sculpture Class
This was another project of mine
from our trip to the gorge. Most of the river was very shallow, not
much more than ankle deep, on a bed of very flat slate. So this big
boulder sitting right next to a big pool that was at least chest-deep
was very dramatic.
Nobody else particularly wanted to wade in deep enough to get to this
rock, so I went by myself armed with some charcoal that we'd found at
an old campfire. The black circle was inspired by Andy
Goldsworthy. After that part was done, I didn't think the black popped
out enough,
so I scratched another stone on the surface of the boulder to make it
white around the edges to enhance the contrast.
